…Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.
- Isaiah 6:3
The name of God is profoundly sacred and God requires all to reverence his name in thought, action and in speech. Exodus 20:7 says, Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that take his name in vain. This is the command of God’s law to all men. I remind you of the sacredness of God’s name which forbids all irreverent and idle use of his name. Certainly those who know God as their heavenly Father would never want to profane his holy name. The desire of our heart should be, Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, Matthew 6:9.
It is a sad reality of our society that the name of God has become a filler word because of our small vocabulary. His name has also become a spring board to make jokes about heaven and salvation that have become acceptable among cultured people. Often we hear people use the words, Oh my God; O Lord; Jesus; God; in common conversation. It is so common that we think nothing of it.
Do not take the name of God in vain. His name is holy and reverent. Be certain that any time you use the name of God as Father, Son or Holy Spirit; your purpose and intention are to honor him. Any other use of God’s name is to take his name in vain.
