Dr.
English Bagby
"I
Could Hardly Wait To Finish School"
By:
Elizabeth Cox
Chapel
Hill, Sept. 9 - Unusual experiences are what pychologists are supposed
to listen to, but Dr. English Bagby, now winding up his 25th year as
professor in the Psychology Department of the University of North Carolina,
took time out from listening to tell a few of his own.
The
amazing events which he has crammed into his 59 years of living include
everything from being a human guinea pig to the rear end of a camel.
Dr.
Bagby was born in Baltimore, Md., in 1891, the son of the late Charles
Todd Bagby, prominent Baltimore lawyer, and Anne English Bagby. By the
time he was 12 years old, he definitely knew that he wanted to teach.
It wasn't until his sophomore year at Princeton, however, where he later
received his A.B. and M.A. degrees, that he knew what subject he wanted
to teach.
Two events
occurred which helped him to make up his mind.
There
were two football players who were failing in several of their courses,
and even in 1912 athletes were required to pass a nominal number of
their subjects in order to be eligible for sports. So Dr. Bagby was
given the assignment of coaching these players in psychology. He turned
out to be such a good prof. that his proteges both made "A"
on the course while Dr. Bagby sheepishly turned up with a "B".
Why He
Picked Psychology
"That
wasn't the only thing that made me decide that maybe psychology was
the thing to teach," Dr. Bagby added. "I suppose the most
important factor was that I was completely disgusted with the psychology
courses offered at Princeton. In fact, I never had a satisfactory course
in psychology during my undergraduate days. It was all so abstract and
impractical. I could hardly wait to finish school so I could teach a
course that would answer questions that young men and women ask - a
course that would deal with facts themselves - not merely the methods
by which they are demonstrated."
Dr. Bagby had a chance to see his dream materialize in 1919, for the
year before he received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins. Unlike ordinary
theses, this one was strictly confidential - a confidential report,
in fact, to the Surgeon General of the United States Army. No member
of the faculty was allowed to read it, but fortunately, Dr. Bagby's
superior officer was a psychologist. He read it and certified it to
the University.
Dr.
Bagby believes that was the first Ph.D. degree awarded "sight unseen."
"Lucky for me," he chuckled, "they didn't decide to renig
several years later when the report was ready for release." The
dissertation was on the effects of high altitudes.
Role of
Human Guinea Pig
Another
"first and only" which Dr. Bagby could probably claim is that
of being the only man to be asphixiated every day for two weeks. This
happened while he was serving as first lieutenant in the Sanitary Corps
during World War I. It was necessary to find out what effects decreasing
amounts of oxygen would have on the individual, and Dr. Bagby was chosen
to be the human guinea pig for the experiment.
He
recalls that at the time he was commuting between his base in Washington
and his home in Baltimore. It upset his mother so much to see him come
home after the first experiment that she refused to let him come back
until the torture process was over.
After
receiving his Ph.D., he went to V.M.I., where he not only taught four
courses a day for a year, but also developed the idea for a book entitled,
"The Psychology of Personality." Published in 1928, the volume
has sold over 5,000 copies and was used as a textbook in leading colleges
and universities in the country, including Princeton, Pittsburgh, and
the University of North Carolina.
Came To
U.N.C. From Yale
It
probably isn't for his contributions in psychology, however, that V.M.I.
will always remember Dr. Bagby. He made a Contributing in another field
which will endure as long as football itself. He wrote the music for
the immortal "Our Alma Mater" which is still being played
at all important festivities at V.M.I.
From
1920 to 1925 Dr. Bagby taught at Yale, and then, "because it was
generally recognized that under Dr. Dashiell, the Psychology Department
at the University of North Carolina was superior to any in the East,
I accepted the appointment as professor, " Dr. Bagby recalled.
Rates
U.N.C. Students High
Dr.
Bagby says that although a very small percent of the students of the
University of North Carolina are trained in expensive prep schools,
they compare favorably with the upper 20 per cent at any college where
he has taught.
Self-help
students who attended the University during the depression will always
remember Dr. Bagby with a feeling of gratitude, for he personally paid
for all medicine prescribed for those who could not afford to pay for
it themselves. In addition, he underwrote the expense of hospital care
for all underprivileged white and Negro children of Chapel Hill. More
recently, he has been supplying breed sows to selected Negro children
of Orange County to enable them to start a pig chain.
One
of the main reasons that Dr. Bagby has been such a well-liked professor
stems from his love and understanding of people. In popularity polls
conducted in recent years to determine faculty favorites, he has always
rated high.
"First-rate",
which is a favorite expression of Dr. Bagby's, is the word that best
describes him. He has never been satisfied to be less than first-rate
in anything he has undertaken.
Great
Sports Enthusiast
He
was an amateur billiard champion of Maryland, a sport which he was forced
to give up when he came to Carolina because of lack of facilities. In
his undergraduate days at Princeton, he played football, basketball,
baseball, tennis and golf.
But
his students at Carolina know him best as an avid hunter and fisherman.
Until five years ago, when poor health forced him to lead a more inactive
life, Dr. Bagby would spend many hours hunting and fishing with his
students. At one time he had acquired the reputation as champion squirrel
shooter of Chapel Hill.
Dr.
Bagby's versatility carries over into dramatics, for with the Carolina
Playmakers, he has been cast as a king, a lady, dragon, and the rear
end of a camel. In the latter role, Dr. Bagby recalls that the ventilation
in the camel costume was so bad that he cut the membranes in his throat
and was in bed recuperating long after the play had been forgotten.
He
has always taken an active part in community activities, and has served
as president of the Rotary Club and of the Chapel Hill Country Club.
Dr.
Bagby is a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity, is an associate in
the American Psychological Association, and has been listed in American
Men of Science and Who's Who in America.
Completing
Another Book
At
present he is completing a book on "Behavior Psychology" which
will represent many years of intensive reading and observations in that
field. It will be used as a textbook in a course for commerce students
which he is now teaching.
A
former student of Dr. Bagby's tells of going to him in tears and telling
how embarrassed she was when she was not able to find the correct exits
in a rat maze, which was part of her laboratory work. The students were
blindfolded and tested on how many times it took before they were successful
in putting the correct exits. But try as she would, she kept going down
blind alleys, even after all the other students had completed the test.
"That
proves only one thing young lady," was Dr. Bagby's reply, "you
are not a rat."
