Notes for ARTHUR BENJAMIN BAGBY:

Arthur lost the lower portion of his right arm in a saw mill accident. In the 1940s, in Leslie, Arkansas, he was in the bank to make a deposit of what little money he had. Before he was able to proceed, men entered, armed with shotguns to rob the bank.

During the first few seconds of confusion, Arthur stuffed his money inside his bib overalls. The men shouted for all to put their hands in the air. Arthur, put his "hand" in the air. One of the men yelled at Arthur, "I said put your hands in the air!" Arthur yelled back boldly, "I only got one hand!".

As some of the bank robbers were emptying the bank of their funds, the others were searching the patrons and stealing their money intended for deposit. As one of the robbers approached Arthur and began to reach toward his bib overalls, Arthur hit the robber who was holding a shotgun, in the gut with the stub of his right arm. The bank robber yelled, "You a nervy old man, ain't ya!?"

Arthur was the only one left that day without being robbed. The robbers left without shooting anyone and were never captured.

An interesting note about the town of Leslie, Arkansas. At one time Leslie was being considered as the Capitol of Arkansas. In the early 1900s it was a booming, growing town, larger than Little Rock. Somehow, the plans were changed and Little Rock was chosen. Leslie is now nearly a ghost town. Very few people live there, and it is much like the same Leslie that it was in the early 1900s.

Notes for JOHN ROBERT BAGBY:

John Robert Bagby was a well respected man in Mountain View, Arkansas and despite the fact he passed from this life in 1978, many residents of Mountain View still remember him today with fondness. Nearly everyone knew him because he owned a small store in town and also held a position at the Stone County Court House, issuing driver's license and license plates. He took an old school approach to granting a driver's license to young people. I have been told by several people who went before him to apply for their license that he would ask them, "Son, can you drive?". As the young man would answer, John would look at the Father of the boy in an attempt to ascertain the honesty of the response. If the answer was, "yes", and the father nodded affirmatively, John would give the boy his driving permit.

Today, Mountain View is a thriving tourist town, but when John resided there it was a small, mountain community, and John developed a unique habit. On Wednesdays, all of the stores would close at noon so families could prepare for Wednesday evening Prayer Meeting. John was in the habit of taking a daily afternoon nap. He would leave his office at the court house and go home for lunch. After lunch, he would take a short nap. If anyone in town needed to purchase a license plate for their vehicle, they knew where John and Hattie lived and they knew if it was afternoon, that John would be at his home. They would go to his home where he kept a small number of license plates and Hattie would make the transaction. Those days are definitely gone with the wind.

He knew the Lord as his personal savior and his life showed fruits that he was a Christian man. He was a faithful member and an ordained Deacon at Flatwoods Baptist Church. He always had a yarn to tell. He had what is known as a very dry sense of humor, but could always have everyone around him laughing. His sense of humor continued until the last hour of his life.

While he lay in the extremely small hospital in Mountain View, his wife Hattie came in to visit him. He heard her coming and pretended to be sleeping. She tip-toed up to the bed and quietly called his name. "John?" No answer came. She called his name again. Still no answer. In fear, she held her hand up to his face to see if she could feel him breathing. As she placed her hand near him, he snorted at her, to scare her, which I might add, worked very well. Thirty minutes later he passed from this life.
