John Bagby, a Virginian, is in Illinois records with John Woodside and his family as pioneers to this township and settled in the same section, but soon afterward sold the place. He improved another farm southwest of his first location, but afterward disposed of this also and removed to Hancock County. Not admiring the county as well as he had anticipated, he returned to this township, where he suddenly dropped dead one day, while carrying in an armful of wood at his home.

Bagby, Davis — b. 1792, NC, d. 1865 Pitman Township History of Bond and Montgomery Counties, Illinois states — "Davis Bagby was a resident of Pitman Township as early as the year 1832, having come here in company with his father-in-law, Miller Woods, both of whom located in the southeast corner of the township...

Bagby subsequently purchased a piece of land in Section 19, where he lived until the year 1865 when he died, lamented by all who knew him. He was a soldier in the War of 1812, having served his country faithfully throughout that memorable struggle."

John Woodside was also among the pioneers of this township. He came from his native state, Virginia, settling on section 16, where he resided about 10 years, when he left the county and state.
