Notes for JOHN CHRISTOPHER BAGBY: A.K.A. JOHN BAGBY OF BUNKER HILL.
Much of the research of the lineage of John Christopher Bagby comes from the book "John Bagby of Bunker Hill", Compiled by: Elizabeth Pollard Cox Johnson and Jessie Gresham Pollard Dodge.

JOHN CHRISTOPHER BAGBY [1792-1880]

The brief wording on his tombstone in the Bruington Cemetery: CHRISTIAN, MERCHANT, PATRIOT, CITIZEN AND FRIEND OF EDUCATION encompasses the character and life of the progenitor of this monumental lineage. The memorial sums up his entire life.

John Bagby professed no religious inclination until 1821 when he became a member of Bruington Baptist Church. Four years later he was made a deacon; then a clerk. His interest and support for the next sixty years never flagged.

Landowner and farmer of many acres he was primarily known as a merchant. He claimed his early grasp of "trade" came through his association with an uncle, Thomas Jeffries. Records show that he and his brother, Richard Bagby, became partners, operating a country store at Stevensville. When his attention was focused on commerce upon the rivers and seas, he engaged the help of his son-in-law, John N. Gresham, at the store. His fortune was made in shipping small grain to the West Indies and South America on vessels called "brigs". But his financial world crumbled with the calamitous years of 1861-65. During his latter years, a small pension from the War Department was his sole liquid asset.

His span of years was actually affected by three wars. Born about ten years after the American Revolution, he experienced the changes in the economy, religious freedom and the building of a new nation. A member of the local militia, he was a ready volunteer in the War of 1812 when we declared: "We could whip the British once and for all." John enlisted under Captain Robert Courtney.

Upon rise just off the highway at Stevensville, Virginia, he and Elizabeth Courtney [Bagby] built a home that in time became comodious for a growing family. It seemed to have an anatomy in three stages: the first part, a small brick dwelling with dormers is dated about 1820; a year later an addition was taxed and in 1834 [the last stage] the property was taxed for seven time its value in 1820. Typical of the early 19th century in the area, it was a structure of clapboard over an English basement, wide halls and a front porch made for rocking and enjoying the country around. The place was given the name "Bunker Hill" honoring an early battle in '75.

In 1839, together with Colonel John Pollard of "Bel Air", John Bagby founded the Stevensville Academy to benefit boys, their own as well as neighbors, and it continued to maintain a high standard for more than 25 years. The daughters of these two households were tutored at home or went to Mrs. Southgate's School for Young Ladies at Little Plymouth.

John Bagby was the son of Richard Bagby [1750-1818] and Susannah Jeffries [1765-1832].

ELIZABETH COURTNEY [BAGBY] (1792-1836)

The daughter, Elizabeth, of Captain Robert Courtney and his wife, Priscilla Campbell Courtney, lived within walking distance of the community of Stevensville. She may have known John Bagby from the time of early childhood as it is believed that he lived only a mile or two north of the village. His enlistment in her father's company, marching off to the drum beats of the War of 1812 may have helped his courtship considerably, for they were married in 1814. Not long after the birth of their 1lth child, she passed away leaving a bereft husband to care for the seven remaining children at "Bunker Hill".

NOTE: According to the book "King and Queen County, Virginia" by: Rev. Alfred P. Bagby, D.D., Elizabeth Courtney was born August 28, 1794 and died September 29, 1836. The grave marker supports the year of her birth over the year in the book "John Bagby of Bunker Hill".

ELIZABETH LUMPKIN MOTLEY [BAGBY] (1799-1880)

Within a year John found solace in the attractive widow of Andrew B. Motley (1797-1823). Born the daughter of Nancy Gresham Lumpkin and William Lumpkin, from the upper part of King and Queen County, she married at 18 one of the sons of Edwin Motley and Elizabeth Redd Motley. Betsy, as she was known, brought to the circle at "Bunker Hill" her three young daughters. Two years later the oldest, Ann, married her step-brother, Richard Hugh Bagby. The younger ones, Mary Frances and Andrewetta Motley succumbed in their teens to one of the many fevers prevalent at the time, no doubt.

It was said that Betsy was a beautiful young woman with good "business sense", which John fully appreciated and valued. She ran the complex household with ease and abundant help, creating an atmosphere of warm hospitality for all seasons. By 1844 three more children were added to a merry household.
