Mrs. Ruth Carlton Tompkins of Burdette, widow of James F. Tompkins, died suddenly late Saturday in New Orleans at a family reunion. She was 68. Services were held Monday afternoon from the First Baptist Church of Blytheville by Rev. E.C. Brown assisted by Rev. Roy L. Bagley, burial was in Elmwood Cemetery with Holt Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Tompkins had gone to New Orleans for a visit with her sister, Mrs. J.S. Webb. She was joined there by three other sisters, Mrs. John Simms and Mrs. W.H. Warner, both of Lake Village, and Mrs. A.M. Todd of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and their only brother, Hugh Carlton of New Orleans. It was their first reunion in several years.

Stricken Saturday of a cerebral hemorrhage, she was removed to a hospital where she died at 5 o’clock. A member of a prominent Arkansas family, Mrs. Tompkins was born October 21, 1881 at Luna landing near Lake Village. She was the daughter of the late Judge Z.T. Carlton and Mrs. Carlton. Mr. and Mrs. Tompkins were married in 1906 at Yellow Bayou Plantation, near Lake Village, and came to Mississippi County in 1913. Mr. Tompkins established the extensive Burdette Plantation operated by other members of his family since his death. Mrs. Tompkins also leaves four daughters, Mrs. George A. Hale and Mrs. Hayes Sullivan of Burdette, Mrs. James P. Tull of Frankfort, Kentucky, and Mrs. Carl Goetsh of Berkeley, California.

In the summer of 1921, Mrs. Brock began a project for black people with a Bible study in the basement of Phillip's Memorial Methodist Church. It was opened in October of 1921, at 1215 Grove Street. In 1926 the work was moved to 1401 College Street as a result of the generosity of Mary Caldwell donating a two–story brick home making a memorial to her father, a minister of the Baltimore Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church. The Bethlehem House had clubs for 200 participants from a wide range of age groups learning arts, crafts, recreational activities and providing a place for needed educational assistance. The Urban Renewal Program, highway and industrial additions, on the west side of Chattanooga included the site of the Bethlehem House. A building program for the West 38th Street site began the move of the ministry to the Alton Park Community.
