Jacob Jennings Bagby served in the Navy during W.W.II. He was a gunner on a Navy destroyer by the name of the U.S.S. Pringle. During battle, it was hit and the ship sank. More than half of the 300 man crew was lost. Jacob spent about six hours in the deep before being rescued.

He is not pictured in the group photos with the survivors because he contracted malaria and was hospitalized.
