JOSH

Paralyzed 5–year old a portrait of courage

Little Josh Bagby is a portrait of courage and determination. The five year old youngster is the son of Paul and Elaine Bagby. He was accidently struck by a car when he was three.

The accident left him paralyzed from his chest down. His injuries were extensive and his hospital stay lengthy. He remained unconscious for 16 of his 31 day hospital stay.

Josh's parents maintained a vigil by his side during his entire hospitalization. "We would sit and talk to him though he remained unconscious," Mrs. Bagby said. His return to consciousness was gradual, according to his mother, who explains when she first realized Josh could remember things. "One day while visiting and talking to Josh, I was telling him about a cartoon we'd seen together some time ago. As I talked about the show, he began to smile, and I knew he could remember."

It was two months, however, before Josh began to talk. Mrs. Bagby said her husband had been away on a construction job, and when he went to his son's room upon his return, Josh said, "Daddy."

Josh gets around with the aid of a wheelchair, and Mrs. Bagby is hopeful of getting braces for him through the Crippled Children's Program.

His confining condition doesn't get Josh down, his mother says. "He's much the same boisterous little boy as he was before the accident," Mrs. Bagby said. "He has always loved to ride his big wheel or his tricycle, so we bought him a little battery powered riding toy. He loves to play and ride so much."

Mr. and Mrs. Bagby strive to keep Josh in the mainstream of life. He attended nursery school last year, and is enrolled in kindergarten at E.B. Terry for the fall. The family attends the Nazarene Church on Lexington Drive where Josh attended Bible School last week. He plays with the neighborhood children as often as he can. One of his injuries left him unable to perspire so he cannot tolerate much heat. His room is a menagerie of toys sure to delight any child. Though Josh shows no self-pity and certainly no lack of effort, Mrs. Bagby says she often senses frustration with him. "He was pulling up on his bed one morning, and he looked up at me so exhausted and said, "I've got to figure some way to get to walking again."

Mrs. Bagby speaks lovingly and admiringly of her son and his fight to return to life as he once knew it. Her emotion filled voice breaks from time to time as she talks of the bravery her little child has continually shown.

Josh is the Bagby's "second family," as Mrs Bagby describes it. The Bagbys have two grown children, Andra, an RN in Bowling Green, and Paul Clark, who serves with the Army in Korea. Mr. Bagby is a retired construction worker and Mrs. Bagby is an inactive RN, who put her career on hold after the birth of Josh.

The Bagbys praise their neighbors and the community for their support emotionally and financially. "So many people have helped us in so many ways. Their kindness was overwhelming."

When Josh was in the hospital in Louisville, Mrs. Bagby says, the switchboard was flooded with calls about his condition. "They only had to ask for him by his first name," she said. "Everyone seems to know Josh. When we walk in the evenings now, everyone speaks to him. They all call him by name."

Mrs. Bagby speaks candidly about her feelings. "I often wonder, "Why did this have to happen to Josh?" Sometimes it's so hard not to be bitter. But faith has played such an important part of it all. I pray all the time that God will help Josh to walk again. The doctors have given us little hope of that, but I believe that through God's help and determination, it is possible."

As I watched Mrs. Bagby lift and care for her son, I saw a deep commitment, a bond between parent and child. I watched as a little boy tried to steady himself after his mother placed him in a chair. I watched him lay, uncomplaining, as his mother braced him to be in a standing position. I watched him as he lay sleeping and saw a little boy too young to comprehend the road ahead of him.

Josh is a unique little fellow, not because he is paralyzed, but because he refuses to sit on the sidelines and let life pass him by. His personality projects a happy child though saddled with such a disability. And his parents equal his strength of character and determination. The Bible says, "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Paul and Elaine Bagby are instilling into their child values which he can proudly carry through life.

So, here's to you, Josh Bagby. I know you're gonna make it — just fine.

NOTE:

In an e-mail from Elaine Porter [Bagby] to Sherri Schäefer [Bagby], September 3, 1999, Elaine writes:

Sherri,

You have my permission to print anything that I send you. I confess I shed lots of tears over that article. In spite of the heartache, I have learned a lot from that accident. Josh has inspired a lot of people and drawn my husband and I closer. He has a terrific sense of humor. Loves music and has friends galore. He is polite, courteous, and caring. He is not bitter in spite of the agony he has endured. It amazes me.

Elaine
